We have a huge a list of movies we want to watch, and the number one film on the list at the moment is Woody Allen’s new romantic comedy entitled, “Midnight in Paris“. The film stars Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams who play a young engaged couple who join their parents on a business trip to Paris. Owen Wilson’s character falls head over heels with Paris and takes secret walks at night to explore. The couple is then faced the illusion that a life different from their own would be better.
Are you sold? Who doesn’t love a rom-com and it’s set in Paris?
“My Heart Is An Idiot is a romantic documentary that spans two years and over a hundred cities. The film captures the road-tripping lifestyle of Davy Rothbart who looks for love in all the right places, and in all the wrong ways.
Climb in the van with Davy as he tours North America promoting his magazine FOUND, a virally popular and iconic printed collection of discarded notes and photographs. Along the way, Davy seeks advice on his tortured love life from people he meets (Zooey Deschanel, Ira Glass, Newt Gingrich, Davy’s mom, and others), and attempts to follow that advice, with comic and surprising results.
The first feature-length film project from filmmaker David Meiklejohn, My Heart Is An Idiot weaves together multiple stories to illustrate the joys and dangers of romantic pursuit.”
Sounds pretty awesome right?
Davy will be present for Q&A after each screening. Check out where the film is showing in a city near you. Hey New Yorkers, check out the movie at Little Field or the Tank.
For over a century Carnegie Hall rented work-live studio spaces atop the famous music hall to artistic tenants such as Marlon Brando, Paddy Chayefsky, and Isadora Duncan. (How awesome, right?)
Jose Birdman Aster, a tentant with unlimited access into this little known world began to film the lives of his neighbors. The project took an expected turn when The Carnegie Hall Corporation terminated all of the tenants’ leases, with plans to eliminate the 115 year old artists colony originally put in place by Andrew Carnegie. The film “LOST BOHEMIA” follows the lives of these tenants to preserve their community and the rich heritage of the studios.
Oh coming off a high from the premiere of Downtown Calling! We’ve been pretty vocal about our obsession with New York “back in the day,” but when it comes to this particular interest we can always learn (and obsess) a little bit more….
Going into the theatre we anticipated the interviews with icons like Deborah Harry, Fab Five Freddy and Maripol. However the documentary really dug deeper into the “underground” by consulting lesser known luminaries like Cynthia Sley and James Chance. So today at the studio we’re downloading their music- the Bush Tetras and Teenage Jesus and the Jerks! Also, we really liked hearing the insight and hindsight from other filmmakers of that era, such as Michael Holman, screenwriter for Basquiat and Henry Chalfant, co-producer of the 1983 graffiti documentary Style Wars.
Speaking of back in the day and Style Wars…Around the time Ce Ce moved to NY (mid 90s), she was photographed with Henry Chalfant for Ego Trip magazine. The fashion story was about Henry and his friend Sarah, the good guys, having a “style war” against Ce Ce and Noah, the bad guys. And there’s a fight between two Asian girls. Guess who wins?
Here’s some images from that 1998 issue of Ego Trip.
Where do we find our design inspiration? Well, our Ivy sneaker in red was inspired by the 1982 cult movie The Smithereens. The film is an amazing snapshot of downtown New York in the early 1980s- a time when the city’s grit and grime were the bedrock for creativity and unabashed ambition. Wren, the female protagonist, is determined to make it in punk music scene and she suddenly finds herself kicked out of her East Village apartment. What is she to do? Despite being homeless, she’s got some great style with those red sneakers!
Trivia point: The writer and director Susan Seidelman is best known for her 1985 film Desperately Seeking Susan and often credited for launching Madonna’s career in the movie business.

Her love interest was played by Richard Hell of Richard Hell and the Voidoids, an iconic punk band in the CBGB’s era.

Fleischner and Ben Chace’s film Wah Do Dem was a winner at last year’s Los Angeles Film Festival and shortlist winner for the London Film Festival.
Here’s a brief synopsis:
Sean Bones plays the lead as Max, a mid-20′s skateboard riding Brooklynite who buys tickets for a cruise to Jamaica for him and his lady. His girlfriend played by Norah Jones breaks up with him and Max ends up going on the cruise solo. Max loses his wallet and clothes at the beach while taking a swim during an excursion off of the ship. He watches the ship sail away in the night without him and Max’s personal journey in Jamaica begins.
Those who are buzzing about The Runaways movie that opens this weekend must also see Foxes, a 1980 teen flick about disenchanted youth in Los Angeles. Jodie Foster stars in this film that features the original Runaways lead singer Cherie Currie as a gorgeous teen living life too fast. Other actors who started their careers here include Scott Baio, Laura Dern, Randy Quaid and the guy who played Damone in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. How does Dakota Fanning compare to the real Cherie Currie?
We love this cult film genre- teenage gritty loss of innocence, exploratory drug and sexual behavior, and many, many broken hearts. We especially like watching the fashion in these movies from the 1970s and 1980s- always inspiring to us design wise. Can you suggest some other films for us to watch?
