The red carpet fashion for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala is always a year highlight for us. To me it’s even better than Oscar fashion! This year’s Met Gala was in honor of the late Alexander McQueen, entitled, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.
Did you follow all of the live-tweeting from the event? We sure did!
We’ve had some time to take in all the fashion and here are our top picks from the night’s event!

Diana Kruger in Jason Wu
Jessica Alba is just glowing in Ralph Lauren
Liv Tyler in Givenchy
Michelle Williams in Miu Miu
Emma Stone in Lanvin

How do trends and creativity become contagious? What defines an “influencer?”

INFLUENCERS A new short film by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson explores what it means to be an influencer and how trends and creativity become contagious today in music, fashion, and entertainment.
The film attempts to understand the essence of influence, what makes a person influential without taking a statistical or metric approach.
Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today’s pop culture. ”Influencers” belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.
Featuring: Deirdre Maloney (BPMW), Rob Stone (Cornerstone), Jon Cohen (Cornerstone), Jeff Staple (Staple Design), Josh Peskowitz (Fashion Editor), Dao-Yi Chow (Public School NYC), David Gensler (The KDU), Sky Gellatly (Team Epiphany), Damon Crepin-Burr (FullSix NY).

The first in-depth exhibition of the work of legendary designer and Spanish couturier Cristóbal Balenciaga opens at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute in New York on November 19th.

Balenciaga opened his Paris fashion house in 1937 and retired in 1968 but his legacy lives on. His craftsmanship and innovative silhouettes has transformed women’s fashion. I scored a Balenciaga dress at a Barney’s New York warehouse sale last year, and it made my world. His work has not only influenced fashion but has impacted Spanish culture and history.
The exhibition will showcase seventy items designed by Cristóbal Balenciaga.
BALENCIAGA: Spanish Master is the result of an unprecedented collaboration between the House of Balenciaga in Paris and an American institution. Queen Sofia Spanish Institute is indebted to Balenciaga, which has opened up its Archives and whose immense generosity has enabled a unique loan of historically significant Cristóbal Balenciaga garments to the exhibition, in addition to access to the Archives’ related materials and iconography. Masterpieces from this highly significant collection include Balenciaga’s 1939 “Infanta” gown, and his four-point silk gazar dress of 1967 which illustrates the increasing abstraction and experimentation in his work.
In partnership with the Ministry of Culture of Spain, highlights from the Fundación Cristóbal Balenciaga include the extraordinary embroidered 1957 wedding dress of Sonsoles Díez de Rivera (daughter of Balenciaga’s Spanish muse, the Marquesa de Llanzol), which is as splendid as the vestments of a Sevillana Madonna figure.
Additional objects such as matador boleros from 1946 and flamenco-inspired dresses from 1951 and 1961 come from museum and private collections in America and Europe.
The exhibition is curated by Hamish Bowles, Vogue’s European editor-at-large.
BALENCIAGA: Spanish Master, November, 19th, 2010 to February 19th, 2011; Queen Sofía Spanish Institute, 684 Park Avenue New York, New York 10065

The second season of The Day Before premieres on the Sundance Channel tomorrow at 10PM EST (can’t wait). Loic Prigent’s documentary series follows six designers — Diane von Furstenberg, Donatella Versace, Alexander Wang, Narciso Rodriguez, Nina Ricci’s Peter Copping and Jeremy Scott — in the 36 hours leading up to their Fall 2010 show. It’s not every day that you get unprecedented access into these designer’s lives.
The show premieres with a behind the scenes look at Diane Von Furstenberg’s show, with one episode airing each night from September 8-13th.
We’re especially excited for the feature on Alexander Wang, who most recently won the CFDA award for Best New Designer of the Year: Accessories. (If you haven’t seen this article, it’s an interesting read from the New York Times titled, Asian-Americans Climb Fashion Industry Ladder.)
Here’s a clip from Wang’s upcoming episode:
A friend of ours suggested we check out Joey Journal blog and we’re loving the content so far! Lots of style blogs and magazines pop up but we think Joey is one to lookout for. Joey. magazine founded by Aaron Richter (photographer/editor/art director) launches this September – btw did we mention we really love print mags? From vintage Kate Moss videos, to behind the scene casting photos, tidbits on everything from books to music – there’s something for everyone. Richter wanted “to make rad shit with cool people” and we’re happy he did. Read more about Richter and Joey at NYMAG.
Tidbit: Our Brand Manager, Kristina once sat for Richter for a portrait series back in 2009.
Those who are buzzing about The Runaways movie that opens this weekend must also see Foxes, a 1980 teen flick about disenchanted youth in Los Angeles. Jodie Foster stars in this film that features the original Runaways lead singer Cherie Currie as a gorgeous teen living life too fast. Other actors who started their careers here include Scott Baio, Laura Dern, Randy Quaid and the guy who played Damone in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. How does Dakota Fanning compare to the real Cherie Currie?
We love this cult film genre- teenage gritty loss of innocence, exploratory drug and sexual behavior, and many, many broken hearts. We especially like watching the fashion in these movies from the 1970s and 1980s- always inspiring to us design wise. Can you suggest some other films for us to watch?
When reviewing our photos from last week’ art show, the images that stood out were based on craft and design. Perhaps we are drawn to these three dimensional objects because most relate to what we do here than more traditional forms like painting.
Doll Chair
An upside down homage to Claes Oldenburg made of Spools of Thread.
A “painting” made from nylon hosiery.
Very very small person knitting.
A weaved harp
We’ve also noticed how craft has entered fashion with the abundance of Navajo weaves on Apparel. The leader of this trend are Opening Ceremony with their collaboration with Pendelton.
