The Rooftop Films series is by far one of my favorite summertime activities. I’m super excited for the screening of the documentary,”The Extraordinary Ordinary Life of José González” on Sunday, June 19th. He’s one of my favorite musicians and you’re not familiar with his work – get ready to learn about him!
“Swedish-Argentine singer José González has played for hundreds of thousands of people across five continents. His cover of the song Heartbeats has graced the soundtracks of countless teen TV dramas. His enchanting, powerfully personal recordings have received nearly unanimous praise from critics and more than a million copies of his albums have sold worldwide–which is particularly impressive given that there are only nine million people in all of Sweden. Despite all this, Jose Gonzalez is not a typical famous musician, and so when Mikel Cee Karlsson and Frederik Egerstrand began to film him as he prepared to record his sophomore album, they knew that they did not want to create a typical rock star biopic. Filmmaker Mikel Cee Karlsson from Sweden will be at the show in person to answer for a Q&A after the film.” (via Rooftop Films)
In addition to the documentary screening, the event will also feature a live performance by José too! Below is José’s video for his song “Crosses”.
We highly recommend you come out to this screening!

“My Heart Is An Idiot is a romantic documentary that spans two years and over a hundred cities. The film captures the road-tripping lifestyle of Davy Rothbart who looks for love in all the right places, and in all the wrong ways.
Climb in the van with Davy as he tours North America promoting his magazine FOUND, a virally popular and iconic printed collection of discarded notes and photographs. Along the way, Davy seeks advice on his tortured love life from people he meets (Zooey Deschanel, Ira Glass, Newt Gingrich, Davy’s mom, and others), and attempts to follow that advice, with comic and surprising results.
The first feature-length film project from filmmaker David Meiklejohn, My Heart Is An Idiot weaves together multiple stories to illustrate the joys and dangers of romantic pursuit.”
Sounds pretty awesome right?
Davy will be present for Q&A after each screening. Check out where the film is showing in a city near you. Hey New Yorkers, check out the movie at Little Field or the Tank.
For over a century Carnegie Hall rented work-live studio spaces atop the famous music hall to artistic tenants such as Marlon Brando, Paddy Chayefsky, and Isadora Duncan. (How awesome, right?)
Jose Birdman Aster, a tentant with unlimited access into this little known world began to film the lives of his neighbors. The project took an expected turn when The Carnegie Hall Corporation terminated all of the tenants’ leases, with plans to eliminate the 115 year old artists colony originally put in place by Andrew Carnegie. The film “LOST BOHEMIA” follows the lives of these tenants to preserve their community and the rich heritage of the studios.
The second season of The Day Before premieres on the Sundance Channel tomorrow at 10PM EST (can’t wait). Loic Prigent’s documentary series follows six designers — Diane von Furstenberg, Donatella Versace, Alexander Wang, Narciso Rodriguez, Nina Ricci’s Peter Copping and Jeremy Scott — in the 36 hours leading up to their Fall 2010 show. It’s not every day that you get unprecedented access into these designer’s lives.
The show premieres with a behind the scenes look at Diane Von Furstenberg’s show, with one episode airing each night from September 8-13th.
We’re especially excited for the feature on Alexander Wang, who most recently won the CFDA award for Best New Designer of the Year: Accessories. (If you haven’t seen this article, it’s an interesting read from the New York Times titled,Asian-Americans Climb Fashion Industry Ladder.)
“Bill Cunningham New York” documentary opens at the New Directors/New Films series tomorrow at MoMA. Oh this is a must see. Buy your tickets in advance, this is sure to sell out!
