DIY: Pastel Hair!

Posted on by 8020shoes

Tis’ the season for colorful hair! We have seen some style icons, celebs and girls around town sporting beautiful pastel locks and it’s not too late to hop aboard the color train.

To get statement hair like Lauren Conrad there are a few things you will need.

First you’re going to need your color,  if you’re looking for a wide arrange of colors check out Manic Panic, but  Splat! hair color also rocks and can be found in select CVS Drugstores. If you’re a brunette you’re also going to need to pick up a bleach so you can get the color you want! Next you’re going to need a color brush, foil, a fine toothed comb, clips and a clear gloss.

After you’ve got all of your equipment you’re ready to begin! Click here to follow the full tutorial from The Beauty Department!

Enjoy! (we know you will!)

Summerscreen at McCarren Park

Posted on by 8020shoes

In the spring of 2005, Noemie Lafrance of Sens Productions, Alex Kane of Jelly NYC, and the Stedman brothers of The L Magazine scouted what Rolling Stone magazine would call “the coolest venue in the country.” Summerscreen launched that same summer, with over 3,000 people coming to McCarren Pool to see Do The Right Thing, and Brooklyn bands playing before the films. SummerScreen continues now entering its seventh year in McCarren Park. Crack a local Six Point Beer, try some delicious Brooklyn food, lie in the sun, and enjoy the film!

We can’t wait for next Wednesday at 6PM, when one of our favorite movies, The Princess Bride, will be playing. From time to time, we catch ourselves daydreaming  about hearing ” as you wish” from an adorable farm boy like Westley, come on who hasn’t? We find it inconceivable that anyone hasn’t seen this film, but for those who haven’t this film is a comedic tale of true love between a beautiful young lady named Buttercup and a handsome farm boy named Westley. The couples relationship is interrupted when Westley’s ship is attacked by pirates and Buttercup mistakes him for dead, but Westley will not give up until he is reunited with his true love. Check below for the rest of the summer schedule!

Weekend Getaway: Tubing down the Delaware River

Posted on by Kristina

The Lothian House B&B at Skinners Falls is nestled between Cochecton, NY and Milanville, PA on the Delaware River, only a four-hour drive from New York city. Built and designed by its owners Mary-Lousie and Bill, the bed and breakfast (continental breakfast served) has a Victorian vibe with rooms filled with antiques.

And for $5/day, you can rent a tube (through Lou’s Tubes) and take a relaxing ride down the Delaware River to really enjoy the surrounding cliffs and nature. Sounds like a good time to me!

Artist Dean Crouser creates beautiful watercolor animal paintings and finds other inspirations from nature. His love for the outdoors and animals formed during warm summers camping, hiking and fishing on the lakes of Oregon, where he grew up.

Crouser uses bright water colors that give his work a quality that jumps out at the viewer and captures them. His goal in his works is to show simplicity and spontaneity that anyone can relate to.

Clueless | Brooklyn Bridge Park

Posted on by Kristina

Guess what’s playing at Brooklyn Bridge Park this Thursday? Clueless! Clueless is a quintessential 90′s film that captured popular culture and fashion of the time like no other. Stylist Beverly Hills high-schooler Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone) helps her classmate become more popular in Amy Heckerling’s film, which was inspired by Jane Austen’s Emma. The movie is super sharp and funny; there are so many memorable moments and lines from the film.

1. Who didn’t love the Cranberries?

2. Did you wear knee-high sock because of this film? Duh!

3. Cher on high school grades: ”Some teachers are trying to low-ball me, Daddy. And I know how you say, ‘Never accept a first offer,’ so I figure these grades are just a jumping off point to start negotiations.”

4. Been there: “Christian said he’d call the next day, but in boy time that meant Thursday.”

5. Nose rings were all the rage once, weren’t they? “Dee, when your allergies act up, take out your nose ring.”

If you’re in New York, check it out – I’m sure there will be people reciting lines from the film, plus director Amy Heckerling will be there!

DIY: Outdoor Candle Holders

Posted on by 8020shoes

This time of year is perfect to have your friends over for some outdoor entertainment. Home entertaining can get pricey but putting your own decorative touch doesn’t have to be. If you’ve been on the hunt for candle holders to brighten up a space, why not try this fun and simple do it yourself project?

These home made holders can ramp up your parties ambiance, and if you use a Citronella candle it can help keep bugs away! To make your own you will need scissors, tape, a pen or pencil, a sheet of paper, nails in different sizes, a hammer and a tin can.

Step One: Fill your tin can with water and freeze it overnight.

Step Two:  Draw the pattern you’d like on a sheet of paper and tape it to your can

Step Three:  Use your nail and hammer to punch holes into the can. You can use different sized nails for variation in your pattern.

Step Four: remove the paper and use warm water to melt the ice. Drop a candle in and your finished!

We loved this DIY so much some of us made more than one and turned them into lanterns! To see how to turn your holders into lanterns, and for the full tutorial visit Puregreenmag.com!

Dana Buoy | Call to Be

Posted on by Kristina

Akron/Family percussionist Dana Janssen aka Dana Buoy released his first solo LP, Summer Bodies on Lesfe this past May. And we just recently stumbled upon his first video directed by Sam Molleur starring Dana himself. The premise of the video is quite amusing. Janssen takes up jogging and spots a pretty lady to which he starts to follow her (in a mostly endearing way) everywhere, literally! Until she makes it pretty clear she’s not into it…

He doesn’t get his happy ending in the video, but you know what Janssen? This song is the real star, don’t worry about the girl. We’ve all been there.  Take a listen to “Call to Be”, we promise that the pretty, carefree pop is what you’ve been yearning for this summer.

BLACK FOLIAGE | July 22 – July 24th, 2012

BLACK FOLIAGE
Chinatown Arcade
48 Bowery
 Street
July 22 – July 24, 2012

This exhibition curated by Matthew Craven, brings together 28 artists using a wide range of techniques and imagery within the field of drawing, painting and collage to create a singular artistic vision. BLACK FOLIAGE takes its name from the contemporary psych rock band Olivia Tremor Control’s 1999 album Black Foliage: Animation Music Vol. One. Like the album, this exhibition combines pop and experimental aesthetics into something eccentric and cohesive. Chinatown Arcade was formerly a cell phone dispensary within the alley at 48 Bowery. It should be interesting to see how the space has been transformed.

The opening reception is on  Sunday, July 22nd from 6-9pm.
